The Second Coming of Christ or the Yoga of Jesus This show draws on Paramahansa Yogananda’s book of the same title and on fragments of another piece we presented more than fifteen years ago at Madrid’s Teatro María Guerrero, based on the Gospel of John. Yogananda’s title does not mean a literal, physical return of Jesus to Earth — as countless prophecies claim from competing readings of biblical quotes. It points instead to an inner experience of the same consciousness that the historical Jesus of Nazareth embodied while he was in the world. Yogananda argues that through defined techniques and scientific methods of meditation we can reach that supreme level of Consciousness through our own perception and awareness. From that idea he reads the Christian gospels through the spiritual wisdom of India’s ancient yogis. An original take on the genuine teachings of Jesus Christ that shows their essential kinship with the Vedic tradition and the ancient science of Yoga. My work has been to set out that teaching of mystical yoga as Yogananda presents it, following episodes from Jesus’s life and miracles according to the gospels — especially John.
