The Burned Garden

A play about how hard it is to judge the past. During the war, several healthy men were admitted to the San Miguel psychiatric sanatorium. Why? Many years later, Garay — already director of the sanatorium then — and Benet, his most brilliant pupil, confront that enigma. In El jardín quemado two fundamental themes of Juan Mayorga’s theatre appear. On the one hand, memory and the difficulty of judging the past. “The past,” Mayorga has said, “is unpredictable; it is no less open than the future, and questions beat in it that can endanger the present that risks observing it.” On the other hand, imagination — and with it, theatre — as an escape from a harsh, cruel reality like that of those defeated in a war.
