The building that houses CaixaForum today opened in 1903 as Mallorca’s first modern hotel, the Gran Hotel. Architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner designed a Modernista landmark that, through the 20th century, lived through different uses and renovations. In 1993, ”la Caixa” Foundation transformed the former Gran Hotel into a cultural centre open to everyone. On this visit we talk about Modernisme, its historical and cultural context, construction details, later reforms and restoration — a journey from early-20th-century Palma to today.
