“La Biblioteca” by Stella Rahola Matutes

“La Biblioteca” – Stella Rahola Matutes Through installation and sculptural pieces, Stella Rahola Matutes builds places and situational encounters that salvage concrete residual materials. Political contexts make reuse nearly impossible, so these materials sit on a threshold. “La Biblioteca” unfolds more than 2,000 discarded borosilicate-glass pieces the artist gathered from workshops across Catalonia. Borosilicate glass is tough and ultra-clear; it melts at higher temperatures than ordinary glass and can only be worked by hand (no mechanisation). That binds it tightly to craft. In post-capitalist societies, handmade production is in crisis: there are not enough workshops to generate enough scrap for a remelt plant, so discarded borosilicate glass cannot re-enter the production cycle. It stays in suspension. The same glass becomes laboratory glassware: test tubes, ampoules, coils — tools of research and scientific knowledge. To get there you need bodily skill first. The path from hand to science flips the usual hierarchy of knowledge. Stella asks, physically, what making can still mean, and offers a slow, empathetic look at our material culture.
