From our finances, questions of justice or medical care to the news, social networks and the products we consume, we live surrounded by forecasts that shape every decision and give us a false sense of security. In this talk, philosopher and Oxford professor Carissa Véliz shows how blind trust in predictions — human or digital — leaves us vulnerable to scammers and self-deception. Carissa Véliz invites us to question the power of those who claim to know what will happen. Because the promise of prediction is not to know the future, but to control others. Carissa Véliz is a Spanish-Mexican-British philosopher. She studied Philosophy at the University of Salamanca, took a master’s at the CUNY Graduate Center and completed her doctorate at the University of Oxford.
