During the Middle Ages, Latin Christianitas formed a shared space of institutions, beliefs and cultural practices linking very diverse territories of Europe and the Mediterranean. Historian Miquel Àngel Capellà will address what this meant for the Balearics, conquered in 1229 and integrated into the Crown of Aragon. Architecture, urbanism and material culture allow us to observe how this process brought political and religious changes, but also new cultural practices, social relations and exchange networks. Miquel Àngel Capellà holds a PhD in Art History from the Universitat de les Illes Balears. His research focuses on the artistic material culture of the late Middle Ages, especially the history of glass in Mallorca, and on the study and conservation of architectural heritage. He is the author of Ars Vitraria: Mallorca (1300–1700) and of various works on decorative arts and historical heritage. He has taken part in regional and national research projects and currently belongs to the projects Gothic architecture in Catalonia and Mallorca and Women and the arts in medieval Castile (13th–15th centuries).
