Playing with limits

In his later years, Henri Matisse developed the cut-paper technique with which he created many of his most celebrated and admired works. But the discovery of this technique was partly shaped by a limitation: in those years the artist had to stay in bed or in a wheelchair, and that led him to replace paints, brushes, canvases and solvents with sheets of paper that were already painted. This formula, apparently accidental, fitted the artist’s constant search for the renewal of art. In this workshop we will take note of Matisse’s lesson to change our gaze on art through exercises that push us out of what we know and lead us to experiment with creation under other limits — opening the way to discoveries, change, novelty… and surprise. In this way we will discover the work of artists with other abilities who have driven art forward and help us understand why the arts — and the world — need to be inclusive. Activity recommended for children aged 6 and over. A creative, inclusive workshop at CaixaForum Palma that turns limitation into a starting point for play, discovery and a more open way of looking at art.
